About this conversion

HEIC is the format iPhones have saved photos in by default since iOS 11. It is genuinely good — roughly half the size of a JPG at the same quality — but Apple adopted it well ahead of everyone else, so a HEIC file that looks fine on your phone is frequently rejected by Windows, by older Android phones, by web forms, and by a great deal of professional software.

Converting to JPG solves that permanently. JPG is the most widely supported image format there is: nothing made in the last thirty years will refuse it. The cost is file size — expect the JPG to be noticeably larger than the HEIC it came from, because JPG uses older, less efficient compression.

The conversion is lossy in both directions, so quality drops slightly. At the default quality this is invisible in ordinary viewing. If the photo matters, keep the HEIC original as well: converting is not the same as migrating, and the HEIC is the better file.

One thing worth knowing: HEIC files can contain several images — a Live Photo, or a burst. This tool converts the primary image, which is the one you see in your photo library.

The converter above handles every other combination too — see the full image converter if you need a different pair.
