Which tool do you need?
Convert when a file will not open where you need it — a HEIC photo from an iPhone on a Windows machine, for instance — or when you want a more modern format.
Compress when the image is fine but the file is too big, or when something has set you a specific size limit to meet.
Resize when the pixel dimensions are wrong: a photo far larger than the page it is going on, or one that needs to match a platform’s published size. If you are trying to get under a size limit, resize before you compress — it costs far less quality.
Remove the background when you need the subject on its own, as a transparent PNG.
