About this conversion

PNG is lossless, so converting a HEIC photo to PNG adds no further compression damage on top of what the HEIC already has. That makes it the right choice when the image will be edited again afterwards, or when it needs to go into software that handles PNG better than JPG.

It is usually the wrong choice for ordinary photographs. PNG was designed for graphics with flat colour and sharp edges — screenshots, logos, diagrams — and it compresses photographs very poorly. A HEIC photo converted to PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the original, sometimes more.

If the file is a screenshot, a scanned document, or anything with text and hard edges, PNG is the better output. If it is a photograph of a person, a place or an object, convert it to JPG instead unless you have a specific reason not to.

PNG also supports transparency, which HEIC photographs do not use, so nothing is gained on that front by this particular conversion.

The converter above handles every other combination too — see the full image converter if you need a different pair.
