About this conversion

This is almost always about file size. PNG stores images losslessly, which means a photograph saved as PNG can easily be ten times larger than the same image as a JPG that looks identical. If something is refusing your upload for being too big, this conversion usually fixes it outright.

The important caveat is transparency. JPG has no transparency at all, so any transparent area has to be filled with something. This tool fills it with white, which matches what most image viewers show behind transparency and is the least surprising result. If your image has a transparent background you intend to keep — a logo to place over a coloured page, for instance — converting to JPG will destroy that, and WebP is the format you actually want.

Keep the PNG when the image is a screenshot containing text, a diagram, a logo, or line art. JPG compression works by discarding detail the eye is poor at noticing in photographs, and that assumption breaks on sharp edges: text converted to JPG at moderate quality develops visible smudging around the letters.

For photographs with no transparency, converting to JPG is close to free — set the quality around 80 and the difference is invisible at normal viewing size.

The converter above handles every other combination too — see the full image converter if you need a different pair.
