About this conversion

WebP is the conversion to reach for when you want a PNG to be smaller but cannot lose its transparency. It supports an alpha channel exactly as PNG does, while producing files typically 25–35% smaller than a comparable JPG and dramatically smaller than the PNG itself.

Browser support is no longer a reason to hesitate. Every current browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari — has supported WebP for years. The remaining awkwardness is outside the browser: some desktop applications, older photo software and a few web forms still do not accept it, so WebP is a better choice for images going onto a website than for images you need to hand to somebody else.

WebP can be either lossy or lossless. This tool writes lossy WebP with a quality control, which is what makes the file small. For a logo or a diagram with flat colour, push the quality high — lossy compression on sharp edges produces the same smudging JPG does, just less of it.

If the PNG is a photograph with no transparency, compare the result against a JPG at the same quality before deciding. WebP usually wins, but not always, and the file sizes are shown for both.

The converter above handles every other combination too — see the full image converter if you need a different pair.
